IMPORTANT SOCIO – ECONOMIC FEATURES
(a)
Trend of growth of population is the highest at 51.26% during the period
1971-91 and the lowest
at 10.34% during the period 1931-41.
(b) The percentage of cultivators and agricultural labourers to total working
population as per 1991 census stands at 63.31% .
(c) Percentage of population living in rural areas in the district stands at
89%.
(d) Agriculture isa the predominant economic activity of the people of the
district .Next to agriculture, handloom and weaving is the main industial
activity.
(e) Major crops grown in the district are paddy, potato, mustard,
jute,sugarcane,wheat, oilseeds and vegetables. The main plantation and
horticultural crops are banana, pineapple, betel-nut, coconut, etc.
(f) Infrastructural facility for industrial development and the development
of other economic activity is very low.
(g) The C.D. ratio of the banks operating in the district is very low at
22.23% and therefore there is opportunity for availability of finance for new
investment.
